BCVFD, led by Chief Robert H. Russell Sr., are the first fire company to arrive on the scene of this plane crash that had just taken off from Idlewild (what is now JFK) airport. The plane nose dove down into the mucky low tide on the west side of Broad Channel in Jamaica Bay between the American Legion Hall and the North Channel Bridge in an area known as Pumpkin Patch Channel. There were no survivors.
