Robert Henry Russell died on Wednesday, January 12 at home in Spring Hill, Florida. He was 70 years old.
He joined the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department on January 24, 1954, just six months after marrying his loving wife Joan.
Chief Russell went on to serve the department for 33 years. He was elected to the rank of Chief of Department an overwhelming 21 times, serving as Chief from 1957-1973, 1975-1977 and again in 1984. Among his many accomplishments was starting the ambulance corps, which still operates today and has helped thousands of people in need of emergency medical care through the years.
Chief Russell was a World War II US Navy veteran. He retired from the NYC Department of Sanitation in 1984 and moved to Florida with his family.
Chief Russell is survived by his wife Joan; daughter Debra Kase; sons Robert jr. (ex-chief), Daniel (ex-captain), Timothy, William and Richard (ex-deputy chief); nine grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
He was buried with military honors at Florida National Cemetery.
